I plan to buy an e-reader. I am not sure which one. I was curios as to whether I would be able to upload e-books I may already have saved to my computer. Also, in addition are you able to annotate?
I bought a PDF version of a textbook for my class also, and instead of using my laptop I would like to read it on a kindle. Is it possible?

I own the Kindle 2. If you ask me to choose again now, I’ll still go for the Kindle instead of the Nook, because I think the web browsing function is rather important (the Nook does not have a web browser). The free internet (and now it is free international internet) plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I’m in need. It is really a cool feature that cannot be missed. And right now it is free for both the U.S. and many other countries, it is just incredible when you bring it to trip.
I like to use the text-to-speech function on the Kindle too, meaning that I can "read" with my hands and eyes free…

It all depends on file format, and more importantly whether they’re protected/DRMed or not. The short answer is if they are in an unprotected format you can either upload them natively or convert them with a program such as calibre. If they are protected, then you won’t be able to read them on an e-reader.
You can make notes and highlights with the kindle, I don’t know about the nook.

I’ll vote for the Amazon Kindle, as the Nook does not have good comment since it launched. you can make annotation on the Kindle for your own ebooks. I’ve also mentioned more about textbooks on the Kindle here:
