When I click on (Insert address) on e-mail compose the address book does not appear on the screen, but is on the bar on the bottom of the screen. How do I get it to pop on my screen instead of having to pull it up.

If you mean for the new window with the address book to pop up, you may have to hold down your Ctrl key while pressing on the button to override your popup blocker.
However, I think you’re talking about Address AutoComplete (you type in the first letter and it suggests the full email). You can click on Options in the upper right corner of your inbox and then on General Preferences to adjust your settings to allow this.
